Big Walk released on 4 August 2026 across four storefronts: Steam (Windows and macOS), the Mac App Store, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Crossplay covers every combination, so the platform you pick does not decide who you can play with — it decides price, input, subscription and how people join your session.
One of those four is free right now if you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, which makes the answer straightforward for a lot of groups.
The four official platforms
| Platform | Price | Download | Subscription | Friends list | Metacritic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | $14.99 | — | No paid subscription required | Yes | 94 |
| Mac App Store | — | — | No paid subscription required | No | — |
| PS5 | Included with PlayStation Plus Essential | — | PlayStation Plus (also the route to the free copy) | Yes | 86 |
| Switch 2 | $14.99 | 3.9 GB | Nintendo Switch Online — required for online play and cloud saves | Yes | 82 |
The differences that actually matter in a session:
- Subscriptions. Switch 2 needs Nintendo Switch Online for online play, PS5 needs PlayStation Plus. Big Walk is online-only, so on those two platforms a subscription is not optional. Steam and the Mac App Store need nothing.
- Friends list. Steam, PSN and NSO all show the host’s active session automatically. The Mac App Store build has no Game Center support, so it shows no friends list at all — those players join by code every session.
- Input. Steam and Mac support mouse and keyboard plus most controllers. Switch 2 additionally supports its mouse mode, which House House built for specifically.
- Review reception. Metacritic has the PC version at 94 (universal acclaim), PS5 at 86 and Switch 2 at 82.
There is no Xbox version
This gets searched constantly and the answer is unambiguous. From the official FAQ: Big Walk “is available for Windows and Mac (via Steam and the Mac App Store), PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. No other platforms are planned at this time.”
That also rules out three other things people look for:
- No PS4 version. PlayStation 5 only.
- No physical release. All four are digital.
- No Game Pass. It is not on Xbox at all, so the question does not arise.
The PS Plus offer is the closest thing to a subscription route, and it is a PlayStation-only, time-limited claim rather than an ongoing catalogue addition.
Which one should you buy
If you already pay for PS Plus: claim it free between 4 and 31 August 2026. It stays in your library while your subscription is active. See the PS Plus page.
If you want mouse and keyboard: Steam, or Switch 2 in mouse mode.
If you do not want a subscription: Steam or the Mac App Store. Both console versions gate online play behind one, and this game has no offline mode.
If your group is on mixed platforms: any of them. Crossplay is universal here — just note that if the host is on the Mac App Store version, everyone joins by code rather than through a friends list.
If price is the only question: Steam and Switch 2 are both $14.99 right now. The Steam discount is 25% off a $19.99 base price; the Switch 2 sale runs until 18 August 2026 at 06:59 UTC.
