The laser pointer is the second item in House House’s “Tools and Toys” line, between walkie-talkies and binoculars. Like most of that list, it is named and not explained.

What makes it worth a page anyway is that it sits directly on top of a mechanic that is documented. Big Walk’s third communication feature is called “Arms!!” — pointing, waving and gesturing “to communicate in situations where talking isn’t an option.” A laser pointer is that, at range.

The problem it solves

Big Walk’s world is Australian bushland and granite coastline — House House drew on Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria for the environment. That landscape is made of features that are individually distinctive and collectively identical: boulders, headlands, gullies, scrub.

Spoken directions fail there. “The big rock” is not a location. And the gesture that would fix it — pointing — has a range limit, because your arm has to be visible for it to mean anything.

Three confirmed facts stack into the reason this item exists:

Voices fade with distance, so you cannot describe things to someone far away.
Arms are the documented fallback when talking is not an option.
Arms stop working at the distance where you cannot make out another character clearly.

A laser pointer is what covers the gap between the range of an arm and the range of a radio. If your group has both a walkie-talkie and a laser pointer out, the person on the radio can talk about the thing the person with the pointer is indicating — which is as close as Big Walk gets to a map marker.
